E3 2011 Overveiw

I think it would be fitting to go over the big stories of E3 first:
I watched the Nintendo press conference live, and have watched the highlights of Microsoft and Sony's conferences as well. So let's review the reveals of the "big three":

Microsoft:
A rather underwhelming wave of new Kinect games that don't do much for Microsoft's hardcore audience. although the attempt to integrate Kinect into the hardcore games is a fun side feature, I don't think many people will be shelling out the 149$-399$ it costs to "make you the controller" just to dissemble guns in ghost recon. And guess what? even though you can play the shooters with Kinect, if you try to play against anyone with an actual controller, the sloppy pointer precision will lead to a quick downfall. And dance central is still the best Kinect game. the demo for a star wars Kinect game was nothing but dated graphics and an utterly disappointing difficulty level. Foes that should be difficult don't even move to attack you, they just spin their electric spears like marching band conductors. than  the linear level design doesn't do much for it either. I know that the Xbox can handle better graphics than that, and that Microsoft can make a better game than that. Next up: Halo 4. after unintentionally leaking news of the upcoming game shortly before the conference, the short cinematic the presented could do little to save them. Halo is an old franchise, long outsold by call of duty: however, I wouldn't mind its return. Nonetheless, if Microsoft wants to bring back this giant, they will have to get their buts in gear. CoD ain't shifting easy.

Sony:
I saw a little less of the Sony press conference than the Microsoft one, but enough to formulate an opinion. you should probably watch it in it's entirety if anything I say interests you. Sony really din't have many new games; they plan to build on the sly franchise and similar games that are already out. their big revelation was the Sony ngp, and the fact that it will NOT be ludicrously overpriced, something Sony has been know for doing. No big influx of move games. Their were some mixed emotions about the expira play coming from AT&T. And, well, that's about it. really, they didn't have a bad conference, but their was no YES moment.

Nintendo;
So much to say, so little time to type in. For Nintendo, I think I will just walk you through the conference in it's entirety. Nintendo opened their conference with a live orchestra playing a Zelda medley to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Zelda. Then Shigeru Miyamoto came on stage to talk about the zelda franchise, about ocarina of time 3DS, and about skyward sword (witch, disappointingly, won't be available till holiday 2011). A new wave of 3DS games, introduced by Reggie Fils-Aime, followed. Although mario kart 3DS felt kind of like a repackaged version of mario kart wii, luigi's mansion 2 and Super Mario more than make up. then came the big announcement.

The Wii U, Nintendo's next home console, was definitely the star of the show. Nintendo showed off the totally unique new controller and claims that the system's processor will be 50% faster than the current home console leader, the Xbox 360, witch contains a tri-core processor, clocked at 3.2 GHz- thus exceeding the processing power of the PS3- three times less than an Xbox- by 350%. The system will also be capable of 1080p hd graphics, along with anything all the way down to 480i. Due out in 2012, the system stands to significantly change the way we play games.

Other:
Battlefeild 3, Skyrim other such big games where also at the show. I will try to do more coverage on them later.
